Antonio Valladares de Sotomayor (born in 1737, died in 1820) was a talented Spanish writer. He was known as a journalist, a poet, and a playwright. He wrote more than 100 plays during his lifetime!
About His Life
Antonio Valladares de Sotomayor came from a noble family in Galicia, Spain. He was born in 1737. In 1760, he moved to Madrid, a big city in Spain. Later, in 1785, he joined a group called the Economic Society of Friends of the Country in Osuna. This group worked to improve the economy and society.
A Busy Journalist
As a journalist, Antonio Valladares de Sotomayor created a publication called Semanario Erudito (which means Weekly Scholar). He published 34 volumes of this magazine! It included many works that had never been seen before. It also had articles with criticism, moral lessons, and funny stories. The Semanario Erudito was published from 1787 to 1791. It even came back in 1816 as the Nuevo Semanario Erudito (New Weekly Scholar).
Writing Plays and Novels
In the late 1770s, Antonio Valladares de Sotomayor started writing plays. He worked with other writers like José Ibáñez and José López de Sedano. He became very successful in theatre in the 1780s. Between 1797 and 1807, he also wrote a popular novel called La Leandra. This novel was published in nine printed books!
