The Church of San Biagio, Montepulciano, designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Elder.

Antonio da Sangallo the Elder (born around 1453 – died December 27, 1534) was a famous Italian Renaissance architect. He was especially good at designing strong buildings called fortifications. These were like castles or walls built to protect cities.

Who Was Antonio da Sangallo?

Antonio da Sangallo was born in Florence, a beautiful city in Italy. His real name was Antonio Giamberti. He came from a family of talented builders and artists.

His Family of Builders

Antonio's father, Francesco Giamberti, worked with wood. Antonio had a brother named Giuliano da Sangallo. His nephew was also an architect, named Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. All three of them became well-known architects.

Antonio also helped raise a boy named Giulio de Medici. This boy later became Pope Clement VII, a very important leader of the Catholic Church.

Antonio's Amazing Buildings

Antonio often worked with his brother Giuliano. But he also created many important buildings on his own. He was a very skilled military engineer. This meant he designed strong defenses for cities.

Fortifications and Defenses

Antonio built important forts and walls in places like Arezzo, Montefiascone, Florence, and Rome. These structures helped protect cities from attacks.

His Masterpiece: San Biagio

His most famous building is the Church of San Biagio in Montepulciano. This church has a special shape called a Greek cross. It means all four arms of the church are the same length.

The church also has a large central dome. It was one of the first big domes finished during the Renaissance period. San Biagio also has two towers. It looks a bit like a smaller version of St. Peter's Basilica.

Other Important Works

Antonio also designed a palace in Montepulciano. He built several churches and palaces in Monte San Savino. In Florence, he created buildings for a group of monks called the Servites.

Some of his other famous works include:

  • The Church of San Biagio in Montepulciano
  • The Forte Sangallo in Civita Castellana
  • The Old Fortress in Livorno

Antonio stopped working as an architect later in his life. He spent his final years enjoying farming.
