Antonio de Lanchares was a Spanish painter. He lived a long time ago, during a period called the Baroque era. He mostly worked in Madrid and the towns around it.
Antonio de Lanchares: A Painter from the Baroque Era
Antonio de Lanchares came from a family of artists. His family included painters and people who made beautiful jewelry. He learned how to paint from a famous artist named Eugenio Cajés.
Antonio de Lanchares painted many religious artworks. One of his paintings was "Jesus in Glory" for a Jesuit church. Another work that still exists today is called "Ascension of Christ."
In 1625, he worked with another painter, Luis Fernandez. They painted a series of pictures about the life of St Peter Nolasco. These paintings were for a special building called the convent of the Carmelitas de la Mercedes.
In 1627, some very important painters thought Antonio was good enough to paint for the king. These painters were Vincente Carducho, Eugenio Cajés, and even Diego Velázquez. They suggested him for the job of "painter to the king." However, Antonio de Lanchares never actually got that job.
