Antonio de Torquemada (born around 1507 in León, Spain – died 1569) was an important Spanish writer. He lived during the time known as the Renaissance. The Renaissance was a period in European history when there was a great rebirth of art, science, and learning.

Antonio de Torquemada was born in León, Spain. He studied subjects like history, literature, and philosophy, which are called the humanities, at the University of Salamanca.

Between 1528 and 1530, he lived in Italy. During this time, he worked as a secretary for the Count of Benavente.

His Famous Books

Antonio de Torquemada wrote many popular books. These books were so well-liked that they were translated into French, Italian, and English.

One of his works, Satirical Colloquies, is set in a countryside or "pastoral" setting. This means it features shepherds and rural life. This style was quite new for its time.

Two of his other famous books are Don Olivante de Laura and Garden of Peculiar Flowers. The famous Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes even mentioned these two books in the first part of his well-known novel, Quijote.
