Apía is a town and a local government area in the Risaralda Department of Colombia. It is located high up in the mountains, about 1,630 metres (5,348 feet) above sea level. Apía is about 60 kilometers (37 miles) away from Pereira, which is the capital city of the region.
In 2023, about 12,613 people lived in Apía. The town offers amazing views of Cerro Tatamá, a large mountain that is part of the Tatamá National Natural Park.
History of Apía
People started settling in the Apía area around 1872. The town itself was officially founded on August 15, 1883. It was started by settlers who came from the Antioquia Department.
Among the first people to build homes here were José María Marín and his wife, María Encarnación de Marín. The settlement was first called La Villa de las Cáscaras, which means 'Town of the Husks'. This was because the roofs of the early houses were made from a native plant called cumulú.

Town Layout
The town of Apía is divided into different areas. The main urban (city) areas include neighborhoods like Jaime Rendón, Bermeja, Centenario, and Villa de las Cáscaras.
Outside the main town, there are many rural areas called corregimientos. These are like smaller villages or districts that are part of the larger municipality.
Economy of Apía
The main way people in Apía make a living is through farming. Coffee is the most important crop grown here. Apía is located in a very famous area for growing coffee in Colombia.
The town is also known for being a leader in the organic coffee movement. This means they focus on growing coffee without using harmful chemicals. A person named Francisco Jose "Pacho" Herrera Gallego helped lead this organic coffee movement.
Culture in Apía
Apía is famous across Colombia for its cultural contributions, especially its music. Many talented musicians and music bands come from here, such as Rubo Marín Pulgarín and Carlos Fernando López Naranjo.
Apía is also home to talented poets. For example, in 2019, three poets from Apía – Gersaín Antonio Restrepo Agudelo, Juan Hely Morales Bedoya, and Francisco Javier López Naranjo – won awards in international poetry contests.
