Santuario is a charming town and a municipality located in the Risaralda Department of Colombia. It is about 64 kilometers (40 miles) away from Pereira, the capital city of Risaralda. In 2023, the town had an estimated population of 12,826 people. Santuario is often called the "Pearl of The Tatamá" because of its beautiful location near the Tatamá National Natural Park.

History of Santuario

Santuario was founded in 1906. In its early days, it was part of the area managed by Anserma and the state of Cauca. Over time, the town grew and changed its administrative status.

How Santuario Became a Municipality

  • 1892: Santuario became dependent on the new municipality of San Antonio de Apía.
  • 1893: The first school was opened in Santuario, showing the community's growth.
  • 1894: Santuario stopped being just a small village (a hamlet) and was officially declared a township. This meant it had more local importance.
  • 1906: It became a parish, which is a church district.
  • 1907: Santuario was officially recognized as a full municipality. This was a big step, giving it its own local government.
