Apaturris costifera is a type of sea snail. It's a small mollusk that lives in the ocean and belongs to a group called gastropods. This species is part of the family Borsoniidae.
About This Snail
This small snail has a shell shaped a bit like a spindle. It's mostly white with a wide, brownish-red band around the middle.
The shell has about five and a half rounded spirals, which are called whorls. The first two spirals at the top are smooth. The other spirals have strong, rounded ridges that run up and down the shell. You can also see very fine spiral lines wrapping around the shell.
The opening of the shell, called the aperture, is quite large. It's pointed at the top and wide at the bottom. Inside the shell, there's a central pillar (the columella) with two small bumps. The outer edge of the shell's opening is rounded and plain.
This snail's shell is about 4.5 millimeters long and 2 millimeters wide. That's smaller than a grain of rice!
Apaturris costifera looks a lot like another snail species called Mitromorpha axicostata. However, Apaturris costifera has a narrower shell, rounder spirals, and less strong spiral lines. Its tip (apex) is also more rounded.
Where It Lives
This sea snail lives in the ocean waters near Tasmania, which is an island state of Australia.
