Apple strudel facts for kids
Apple strudel (which is Apfelstrudel in German) is a delicious dessert that comes from Austria. You can also find this sweet treat in many countries that were once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, like Hungary and the Czech Republic.
How Strudel Began
The idea for strudel came to Austria from the Ottoman Empire. It's a bit like another sweet pastry called baklava. People first wrote about strudel way back in 1696. It became very popular after Empress Maria Theresia, a famous ruler, enjoyed eating it.
Making Strudel
Strudel is made with a special kind of dough. It's very thin and stretchy, almost like paper! Inside, it's filled with yummy sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, raisins, and a few bread crumbs.
Making the dough can be tricky because it needs to be stretched out very thin. So, sometimes people buy ready-made strudel pastry. You can also make apple strudel using puff pastry, which is flaky and light.
Usually, strudel is served warm. People often enjoy it with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. Vanilla sauce is also a popular topping in many places.
