Apolo Robin Nsibambi was an important Ugandan academic and politician. He was born on October 25, 1940, and passed away on May 28, 2019. He served as the 8th Prime Minister of Uganda. This is a very high leadership position in the country. He held this role from April 1999 until May 2011. After him, Amama Mbabazi became the Prime Minister.

Early Life and Learning
Apolo Robin Nsibambi was born on October 25, 1940. He was one of 12 children. His father, Semyoni Nsibambi, was a leader in the "East African Revival" movement. Apolo Nsibambi went to King's College Budo for his high school studies.
He loved learning and earned several degrees. He got a Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Makerere University. He then studied in the United States, earning a Master of Arts degree in political science from the University of Chicago. Later, he received his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from the University of Nairobi.
His Career and Public Service
Nsibambi had a long and impressive career. He spent many years teaching and leading at Makerere University.
Working at Makerere University
- From 1978 to 1983, he was the dean of the Faculty of Social Science.
- He held this position again from 1985 to 1987.
- In 1987, he became the head of the Political Science Department. He stayed in this role until 1990.
- From 1994 to 1996, he was the Director of the Makerere Institute of Social Research.
- He also served as the chancellor of Makerere University from 2003 to 2007.
Serving in Government
Apolo Nsibambi also held important roles in the Ugandan government:
- From 1996 to 1998, he was the Minister of Public Service.
- In 1998, he became the Minister of Education and Sports.
- In 1999, he was appointed Prime Minister of Uganda. This is the head of the government's daily activities. He also became the Leader of Government Business in Parliament. He served as Prime Minister for 12 years.
Personal Life
Apolo Nsibambi was married twice. His first wife, Rhoda, passed away in 2001. He then married Esther Nsibambi in 2003. He was a father to four daughters. He was also a practicing Anglican. Apolo Nsibambi passed away on May 28, 2019, at the age of 78.
