Aponotoreas villosa is a special kind of moth. It belongs to a group of moths called Geometridae. This moth is found only in New Zealand, which means it is endemic to that country.

How did this moth get its name?

This moth was first officially described in 1917. A scientist named Alfred Philpott gave it the name Notoreas villosa. Years later, in 1986, another scientist, R. C. Craw, created a new group of moths called Aponotoreas. He decided that A. villosa fit perfectly into this new group. That's why its name changed to Aponotoreas villosa.

Where does this moth live?

The first male A. villosa moth was found in 1910. It was discovered at a place called The Hump, which is near Waiau. A few years later, in 1915, the female of this moth was also found in the same area by C. C. Fenwick. These moths have also been seen in the Hunter Mountains in New Zealand.

What kind of home does it like?

A. villosa moths prefer to live in open, grassy areas. You can find them in grasslands up to 1200 metres high. That's like being on top of a really tall hill!

When can you see this moth?

Adult A. villosa moths are usually seen flying around during the warmer months. They are most active between December and February.
