Applecross Bay is a large, remote bay on the west coast of Scotland. It's located next to the small fishing village of Applecross. This beautiful bay is part of the Applecross peninsula in the Scottish Highlands.
The bay is a "tidal coastal embayment." This means it's a part of the sea that curves into the land, and its water level changes with the tides. It sits between two sea lochs, Loch Torridon and Loch Kishorn.
For a long time, Applecross Bay and its village were very hard to reach by road. Things changed in the late 18th century. Now, you can get there by a long coastal road from Shieldaig, which was finished in 1982. Or, you can take the famous Scottish Gaelic: Bealach na Bà, also known as the Pass of the Cattle. At 625 metres (2,051 ft) high, it's one of the highest roads in Scotland!
The village of Applecross was started by a person called St. Moalrubha way back in the 7th century. Today, the only thing left from St. Moalrubha's time is a special carved stone. He built a chapel there many centuries ago.
Exploring Applecross Bay
Applecross Bay is a great place to visit. It offers stunning views and a sense of being far away from busy cities. The area is known for its rugged beauty and peaceful atmosphere.
What is Applecross?
When people talk about "Applecross," they often mean the small group of houses right at the head of the bay. This area is actually called 'Shore Street' or just 'The Street' by local people. However, the name Applecross really refers to a much bigger area. It includes all the small communities around the peninsula. These include places like Toscaig, Culduie, Camusterrach, and Sand.
Applecross is also the name of the local land area, called an estate. It's also the name of the larger local area, or civil parish, which includes other villages like Shieldaig and Torridon. About 544 people live in this wider Applecross area.
The Landscape Around the Bay
Applecross Bay is surrounded by amazing natural scenery. The flat land of the Applecross peninsula overlooks the bay. This peninsula is bordered by three main hills.
- To the north of Applecross Bay, you'll find Beinn a'Chlachain. This hill stands at 624 metres (2,047 ft) tall.
- To the west of the bay is An Staonach, which is 516 metres (1,693 ft) high.
- To the southeast and south of An Staonach is Sgurr a'Chaorachain. This is the biggest hill nearby, reaching 792 metres (2,598 ft).
Even further away, about ten miles to the west of Applecross Bay, is Sgurr a'Gharaidh. This peak is 732 metres (2,402 ft) tall. These hills make the landscape around Applecross Bay truly dramatic and beautiful.
