Applewood, also known as Applewood smoked cheddar, is a special kind of cheese. It is a round, white Cheddar cheese that has a smoky taste. This cheese is made in Somerset, England, by a company called Norseland Limited.
What is Applewood Cheese Like?
Applewood smoked cheddar is a cheese that feels quite firm. It is not actually smoked over wood. Instead, it gets its smoky taste from an artificial smoke flavouring.
The cheese is covered with a light layer of paprika. This gives it a nice golden-orange colour. Sometimes, the cheese can be quite soft. This makes it a bit tricky to grate. Even though it has a smoky flavour, it does not leave a burnt taste in your mouth.
Vegan Applewood Cheese
In 2019, Norseland Limited created a plant-based version of their Applewood cheese. They worked with a company called VBites to make it. This vegan cheese comes in both pre-sliced packs and blocks. It even won an award in 2020 for being the Best Vegan Cheese at the FreeFrom Food Awards.
