Aquakultre facts for kids
Aquakultre is a Canadian music group from Halifax, Nova Scotia, led by singer and rapper Lance Sampson. They are known for their unique blend of soul and R&B. Their album Legacy was nominated for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize, a big award for Canadian music.
Lance Sampson's family comes from Africville, and he grew up in the Uniacke Square area of Halifax. During a challenging time in his youth, he discovered the music of artists like Common and Erykah Badu. This inspired him to teach himself how to play the guitar.
Music Journey
Lance Sampson started performing as a rapper and singer in 2015. In 2018, he won CBC Music's yearly Searchlight competition with his song "Sure." This was a big step for his music career.
The Legacy Album
Lance recorded his album Legacy very quickly, in just seven days! He worked at the National Music Centre in Calgary, Alberta, with a talented band that included Nathan Doucet, Jeremy Costello, and Nick Dourado. Before the album came out, they released a few songs like "Pay It Forward," "I Doubt It," and "Wife Tonight." The full album was released in May 2020 by Black Buffalo Records.
Recent Projects
In August 2020, Lance announced his second album, Bleeding Gums Murphy. This album was a team-up with DJ and producer Uncle Fester, and it was released on October 9.
The music video for his song "Pay It Forward," which Lance directed with Evan Elliot, won the Audience Award at the 2021 Prism Prize. This award celebrates the best music videos.
Aquakultre also performed on the 2021 FreeUp! The Emancipation Day Special, a special show celebrating Emancipation Day. Lance also sang on "Summer Night Songs," which is the main song for the 2021 documentary The North Star: Finding Black Mecca.
His third album, called Don't Trip, is planned to be released in July 2022.
