Arashi no Yoru ni (あらしのよるに, lit. One Stormy Night) is a popular series of children's books. It was written by Yūichi Kimura and illustrated by Hiroshi Abe. The first book, published in 1994, won important awards like the Kōdansha Literature Culture Award.
The story became so loved that Yūichi Kimura wrote six more books. The series grew into a compilation and later inspired a movie. It even appeared in Japanese school textbooks. In 2005, an animated film was released, covering all seven books. Later, a computer-animated TV series called Arashi no Yoru ni: Himitsu no Tomodachi (あらしのよるに ひみつのともだち, One Stormy Night: Secret Friends) aired in 2012.

A Story of Unexpected Friendship
The story begins one stormy night. A young goat named Mei seeks shelter in a dark barn. Inside, Mei meets another creature also hiding from the storm. They cannot see or smell each other in the dark. They talk and become friends, deciding to meet again the next day. Their secret password is "one stormy night."
Meeting a Wolf Friend
The next day, Mei discovers the friend is a wolf named Gabu. This is a big surprise because goats and wolves are usually enemies. Despite their differences, they feel a special connection. They decide to keep their friendship a secret and meet regularly.
Challenges to Friendship
Mei's goat family and Gabu's wolf pack eventually learn about their secret. Both groups are very upset and forbid the friendship. They try to make Mei and Gabu spy on each other. Mei and Gabu refuse to let their families control their bond. They decide to run away together. Their goal is to find a peaceful "emerald forest" where they can be friends without fear.
A Dangerous Journey
Giro, the leader of Gabu's wolf pack, sees Gabu as a traitor. He and his pack hunt Mei and Gabu. The two friends face many dangers, including a harsh snowstorm. Exhausted, they rest on a mountain. Mei, knowing Gabu is very hungry, offers to help him find food. Gabu, though hungry, realizes he could never harm his friend.
Memory Loss and Reunion
As Gabu's pack approaches, an avalanche sweeps everyone away. The next morning, Mei finds the "emerald forest" they dreamed of. Gabu is found in another cave, but he has lost his memory. He doesn't remember Mei or their friendship. Mei is heartbroken, unsure how to help Gabu remember.
Later, Gabu teases Mei, not knowing who he is. Mei sadly says it would have been better if they had never met "one stormy night." Hearing these words, Gabu's memory slowly returns. He remembers Mei and their adventures. Overjoyed, Mei and Gabu reunite. They watch the moon rise, promising their friendship will last forever.
