Arcadi Mas i Fondevila was born in Barcelona. His father was a tailor. He noticed Arcadi's artistic talent early on. So, he sent Arcadi to study art. Arcadi went to the Escola de la Llotja, a famous art school in Barcelona. There, he learned from teachers like Claudi Lorenzale and Antoni Caba.

When he was 20, Arcadi had his first art show. It was at the "Associació Artística de Barcelona". In 1873, he visited Madrid. He showed a painting called "Pel juny la falç al puny" (In June with Sickle in Hand). King Alfonso XII bought this painting the next year.

In 1875, Arcadi received the first Fortuny Scholarship. This award came from the city government of Barcelona. It allowed him to travel and study art in Italy. He stayed in Italy for ten years. During this time, he visited many important art cities. He also sent his artworks back home to be shown at the Sala Parés gallery. While in Italy, he was greatly inspired by the artist Domenico Morelli.

After returning home, his friend Joan Roig i Soler suggested he come to Sitges. There, he worked with Santiago Rusiñol. This led to the start of the "Escola Luminista" (Luminist School). This was an art movement that included many well-known Catalan painters.

Arcadi continued to show his art widely. He even exhibited at the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition. In the 1890s, he traveled to Madrid and Granada with Rusiñol. They created illustrations for the newspaper La Vanguardia. After 1895, he worked full-time as an illustrator for La Ilustració Catalana.

In 1899, he joined the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc, an art group. The next year, he had his first exhibition of pastel drawings. In 1913, an American art supporter named Charles Deering helped him. Thanks to Deering's donation, Arcadi was able to decorate the archway (called a tympanum) of the Saint Catherine portal. This was at the parish church in Sitges. The original artwork has faded over time, but a copy is now on display.

In 1928, Arcadi was chosen to paint murals. These murals were for the Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya, an important government building. His last art show was in 1932. It was held at "La Pinacoteca", a local art gallery. In 1985, a large show of his artworks was held at the Maricel Museum.
