The Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc (which means "Saint Lluc Artists' Circle" in English) is an art group from Barcelona, Catalonia. It was started in 1893 by a group of artists. They wanted to create a serious art society. They felt that some other art groups at the time were not focused enough on traditional values.

Some of the artists who helped start the group were Joan Llimona, Josep Llimona, Antoni Utrillo, and Alexandre de Riquer.

Famous Members and Influence

Over the years, many important artists joined the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc. One of its presidents was Lluís Serrahima. Famous members included the architect Antoni Gaudí and the painter Joan Miró. Other notable artists like Joaquín Torres García also attended drawing classes there.

The group was very important in shaping a new art style called noucentisme. This style focused on order, clarity, and a return to classical ideas in art.

After the Spanish Civil War

After the Spanish Civil War, the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc was reorganized. It helped support many cultural activities. For example, it protected groups like the Agrupació Dramàtica de Barcelona (a theater group) and the Coral Sant Jordi (a choir). It also supported early performances by music groups like Els Setze Jutges and theater groups like Els Joglars.

The Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc created the Joan Miró Drawing Prize to encourage new artists. In 1993, the Catalan government gave the group a very special award called the Creu de Sant Jordi. This award is one of the highest honors in Catalonia.
