Arcadia Group plc was a big British company that owned many popular clothing stores. It was based in London, United Kingdom. You might have known some of its famous brands like Topshop, Topman, Miss Selfridge, Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Evans, and Wallis.
The company had over 2,500 stores in the UK. You could also find its clothes in big department stores like Debenhams and Selfridges. Arcadia Group also had hundreds of stores in other countries.
Who Owned Arcadia Group?
Most of Arcadia Group was owned by a company called Taveta Investments. This company belonged to Tina Green, who is the wife of Sir Philip Green. Sir Philip Green was also the chairman, or head, of Arcadia Group.
Financial Challenges
Over the years, Sir Philip Green faced some questions about how the company's money was handled. For example, in 2005, a lot of money (about £1.2 billion) was paid out to the Green family from Arcadia Group as "dividends." Dividends are payments made to a company's owners from its profits.
Later, in 2019, it was reported that Arcadia Group's pension fund had a large shortage of money, about £300 million. A pension fund is money set aside to pay employees when they retire.
Some people, including a British Member of Parliament named Frank Field, openly questioned these large payments to the owners. They felt it was unfair for so much money to be paid out when the company later faced financial difficulties, which could affect its employees.
