The Arch and Ridge Streets Historic District is a special area in Marquette, Michigan. It runs along Arch and Ridge Streets, from Front Street all the way to Lake Superior. This district is important because it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. This means its buildings and history are protected. One famous building here is the Call House.

What Makes This Historic District Special?

This historic area is mostly made up of homes. It sits on a ridge that runs east to west, which is why Ridge Street has its name. You can find many amazing houses here. Some were built for important people in Marquette's past. Others were more simple homes for everyday workers.

Buildings for Everyone

Beyond just houses, the district also has two public buildings. These are the Peter White Library and the First United Methodist Church. This mix of homes and public spots shows how the community grew.

Buildings Made of Local Stone

Many buildings in the district are made from local sandstone. This stone gives them a unique look. For example, the Daniel Merritt House and St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral are both built with this beautiful stone. A small house in this neighborhood even inspired a book! It was the setting for Carroll Watson Rankin's 1904 novel, The Dandelion Cottage.

A Look Back: History of the District

The first building in the Arch and Ridge Streets Historic District went up in 1867. This was a house built by Peter White. He was a very important person in Michigan's history.

How the Neighborhood Began

After Peter White built his home, many other important people followed. Over the next 35 years, more houses were built. These included homes for pioneers, business owners, and other leaders of Marquette. Some of these early residents were Hiram A. Burt, Charles H. Call, Daniel Merritt, and James Jopling. Their homes helped shape the look of this historic neighborhood.
