Archibald Acheson was an important Irish politician and a nobleman. He was born on September 1, 1718, and passed away on September 5, 1790. He was known as Sir Archibald Acheson before he received higher titles.

Archibald Acheson's Life

Archibald Acheson was the son of Sir Arthur Acheson. When his father passed away, Archibald inherited the title of a baronet. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Later, Archibald received even higher titles. In 1776, he became "Baron Gosford." Then, in 1785, he was made "Viscount Gosford." These titles meant he was a member of the nobility.

Archibald was also very active in politics. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Irish House of Commons. This was like being a representative in the government, helping to make laws for Ireland.

He first represented Dublin University from 1741 to 1761. After that, he represented County Armagh until 1776. He also briefly represented Killyleagh but chose to serve for County Armagh. Later, he represented Enniskillen for a short time.

Besides being an MP, Archibald held other important roles. He was appointed High Sheriff of Armagh in 1751. A High Sheriff was a top law enforcement officer in a county. He also served as High Sheriff of Cavan in 1761. From 1756 to 1761, he was a Deputy Governor for County Armagh. On May 7, 1768, he became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a group of important advisors to the King or Queen.

Archibald Acheson's Family

Archibald Acheson married Mary Richardson in 1740. They had the following children:

  • Hon Nichola Acheson
  • Arthur Acheson, 1st Earl of Gosford (born around 1742, died in 1807)

He was also the father of Hon. Anna Maria Acheson.
