Arden, Texas facts for kids
Arden is a ghost town in Irion County, Texas, United States. In the year 2000, only one person lived there. It was named after the Arden family, who first claimed the land in 1885.
The Story of Arden
Arden started to grow when a post office opened in 1890. A school was built in 1892, which helped the town get bigger. By 1947, about 130 people called Arden home.
Why Arden Became a Ghost Town
Life in Arden became very difficult because of two main problems:
- There was a long period of very dry weather, called a drought. This made it hard for farmers to grow crops.
- The price of cotton, which was a major crop for the area, dropped very low. This meant farmers earned less money.
Because of these challenges, many people started to leave Arden. Most businesses in the town were empty by 1966. Today, Arden is known as a ghost town, meaning it's mostly abandoned.
