The Story of Arden Fair
How It All Began
Arden Fair first opened its doors in 1957. Back then, it was a single-story outdoor mall. Imagine shopping outside! One of the first big stores was Sears. It was a bit separate from the rest of the mall at first. Another store, Hale's, opened in 1961. This store later became Weinstock's. By the 1970s, the mall was changed into an indoor shopping center. This meant shoppers could stay warm and dry!
Big Changes and New Stores
In 1989, Arden Fair got a huge makeover. The mall almost doubled in size! They added a second floor, which gave space for even more shops. A new food court was also added, perfect for grabbing a snack or meal. This renovation also brought the first Nordstrom department store to Sacramento. The old Sears building was updated, and Sears moved into a new spot that finally connected it to the main mall.
In 1994, JCPenney became the mall's fourth main store. It took the place of a movie theater. That movie theater moved to a new entertainment area right next door. In 1996, Weinstock's changed its name and became the Macy's we know today. This happened because of a big company deal.
Fun Facts and Recent Updates
For a few years, from 2004 to 2008, a local TV station, KCRA-TV, had a special studio inside the mall. It was called "The KCRA 3 Experience." Shoppers could watch how a news show was made and even get a chance to be on TV! This studio was later replaced by a Verizon Wireless phone store.
In recent years, some big changes have happened. In July 2020, Nordstrom closed its store at Arden Fair. Then, in April 2021, Sears also closed its doors. This means that JCPenney and Macy's are now the main big stores at Arden Fair.
