Arenal is a special area called a district in Costa Rica. It is part of the Tilarán canton, which is like a county. This canton is located in the Guanacaste province. The town of Nuevo Arenal is found within this district.

History of Arenal
Arenal district was officially created on April 16, 1979. This happened through a special government decision called Decreto Ejecutivo 10002-G.
Geography of Arenal
Arenal covers an area of about 73.72 square kilometers. This is roughly the size of 10,000 football fields! The district is located at an elevation of 620 meters above sea level. This means it's quite high up, which can affect its climate and landscape.
