River's Journey
The Argeş River starts its journey high up in the Făgăraş Mountains. This is a beautiful mountain range in the Southern Carpathians. The river forms where two smaller streams, the Buda and the Capra, meet near a place called Arefu.
Flowing Through Romania
From its mountain source, the Argeş River flows for about 350 kilometers (217 miles). It travels through several counties in Romania. These include Argeş, Dâmboviţa, Ilfov, Giurgiu, and Călăraşi. Along its path, the river passes by important cities like Curtea de Argeş, Piteşti, and Olteniţa.
Meeting the Danube
The Argeş River eventually reaches its end point near the city of Olteniţa. Here, its waters join the much larger Danube River. The area of land drained by the Argeş and its smaller rivers is called its watershed. This watershed covers a large area of about 12,600 square kilometers (4,865 square miles).
River Branches
A river like the Argeş has many smaller rivers and streams that flow into it. These are called tributaries. They add water to the main river, making it bigger as it flows.
Left Tributaries
Some of the main rivers that join the Argeş from its left side include:
- Buda
- Valea cu Peşti
- Râul Doamnei
- Dâmboviţa
- Sabar
- Rasa
Right Tributaries
On the right side, some of the important tributaries are:
- Capra
- Cumpăna
- Valea lui Stan
- Neajlov
- Zboiul
