Oltenița is a city in Romania, located in Călărași County. It's in the region called Muntenia. The city sits on the left side of the Argeș River, right where it joins the mighty Danube River.

Oltenița Through Time: A Look at History
Oltenița has a very long history! Scientists have found signs of an ancient village on a nearby hill called Gumelnița. This village dates back to the Neolithic Age, around 4000 BC. This means people lived here thousands of years ago!
The first time the town of Oltenița was mentioned in official records was in 1515. This was during the rule of Neagoe Basarab, a prince of Wallachia.
Oltenița's Role in Past Wars
In November 1853, at the start of the Crimean War, a big battle happened here. Ottoman forces tried to cross the river and caused heavy losses for the Russian army in what was called the Battle of Oltenița.
Later, during the Russo-Turkish War, 1877–1878, Oltenița became an important place. Romanian troops crossed the river here to help the Russian Army during the siege of a stronghold called Pleven (also known as Plevna).
During World War I, there were many fights near Oltenița. Across the Danube, at a place called Turtucaia, the Battle of Turtucaia took place. This was a big defeat for the Romanian Army. After this, the soldiers in Oltenița and Turtucaia often fired cannons at each other.
