Argonne was once a small town in Miner County, South Dakota. Today, Argonne no longer exists as a town. It is known as an "extinct town."
The Story of Argonne
The town was first called St. Marys. It was planned out in 1886. Later, its name was changed to Argonne.
A post office opened in Argonne in 1920. It served the town until 1954. The town's name, Argonne, came from a famous battle. This battle was called the Battle of Meuse-Argonne. It was a big event in history.
Argonne was also known for its high school basketball team. In 1953, a player named Delbert Gillam made history. He played for the Argonne Arrows team. Delbert scored 72 points in one game. This set a new state record for South Dakota. He made 31 shots from the field and 10 free throws.
