The Arhopala anthelus, also called the angelus bush blue, is a type of butterfly. It belongs to the lycaenid family, which are often called "blue butterflies." You can find these beautiful butterflies in the Indomalayan realm, which includes many countries in Asia.

What Does the Anthelus Bushblue Look Like?

This butterfly has different looks depending on if it's a male or female.

Male Butterflies

The male Anthelus bushblue is very striking.

  • Its top wings are a bright, shiny violet-blue color.
  • The edges of its front wings are black.
  • The back wings have a wide brown edge at the top.
  • They also have a thin black line along the back edge.
  • The tail is black with a white tip.
  • Underneath, both wings are a light grayish-brown.
  • They have dark spots with whitish edges.
  • The front wings have three big spots that get larger.

Female Butterflies

Female Anthelus bushblue butterflies also have beautiful colors.

  • Their top wings are violet.
  • They have wide brown edges on their front wings.
  • The back wings also have brown borders, but they are not as wide.
  • The underside of the female butterfly looks similar to the male.

Different Types of Anthelus Bushblue

Just like people from different places might look a bit different, butterflies can also have different "subspecies." These are like different versions of the same butterfly. They live in various parts of Asia and can have unique patterns or colors.

Here are a few examples of these subspecies:

  • A. a. anthelus is found in Burma.
  • A. a. anthea lives in places like Thailand and Vietnam.
  • A. a. anunda is found in Borneo and Sumatra. This type has cool "panther-like" stripes on its underside! The females of this type have darker wings on top.
  • A. a. grahami lives in Malaysia. Its females can be blue to violet-blue with wide borders.
  • A. a. jabadia from western Java has males that are a brilliant "morpho-blue" color, which is a very bright blue.
  • A. a. majestatis from Nias is known for its deep blue color with a very bright shine.
  • A. a. saturatior from the Philippines (Palawan) is another distinct type.
  • A. a. sotades from the Philippines (Mindanao) is a bright light blue. Sometimes, its females have a greenish shine.
