Ariel Cañete's Golf Journey
Ariel Cañete was born in Santa Teresita, Buenos Aires, Argentina. He started his professional golf career in 1995. This means he began playing golf as a job, not just for fun.
Starting as a Pro
Early in his career, Cañete played on local Argentine golf tours. He also competed on the Tour de las Américas, which is a golf tour for players in North and South America.
Playing in Europe
In 2002, Cañete began playing on the Challenge Tour. This is Europe's second-level golf tour, where players try to earn a spot on the main European Tour. By 2005, he played well enough to join the European Tour, which is one of the biggest golf tours in the world.
In 2007, Ariel Cañete won the Joburg Open tournament. This was a very important win because it gave him a special pass to play on the European Tour for two more years. After this big win, he also played in events on the Sunshine Tour (in Southern Africa) and the Asian Tour.
Success in Latin America
Later, Cañete found great success playing in Latin America. In 2012, he won his first professional tournament since 2007, the TransAmerican Power Products Open. This was part of the PGA Tour Latinoamérica. He won another tournament that same year, the Olivos Golf Classic-Copa Personal.
Because of his great performance, Cañete won the "Order of Merit" for PGA Tour Latinoamérica in 2012. The Order of Merit is like a ranking that shows who earned the most money or points on the tour. Winning it helped him move up to the Web.com Tour for 2013. The Web.com Tour is a major step for golfers hoping to reach the top-level PGA Tour in the United States.
Playing in Major Tournaments
Ariel Cañete has played in one of golf's biggest tournaments, called a "major." In 2008, he competed in The Open Championship. He finished tied for 39th place, which is a good result in such a challenging event.
Amateur Achievements
Before turning professional, Ariel Cañete had a successful amateur career. He won the South American Cup (also known as the Los Andes Cup) three times:
