How Santa Teresita Started and Grew
Santa Teresita was founded in 1946. A group called the Santa Teresita Development Association helped it grow quickly. They worked hard to get important things built. By 1949, the town had paved roads, a telephone system, a power plant, and a clinic.
Building the Pier
In 1947, a wooden pier was built. It was made longer in 1972, reaching 200 meters (656 feet) into the sea. A big storm in 1983 damaged it. After that, the pier was rebuilt using strong concrete.
Early Fun and Places to Stay
In 1950, the Santa Teresita Golf Club opened. It was started by an American engineer named Luther Koontz. The first place for visitors to stay, called Hostería Santa Teresita, also opened around this time. More hotels opened in the 1950s. In 1959, the famous Hotel Bristol welcomed its first guests. By 1960, about 547 people lived in Santa Teresita all year round.
Growing Up: Schools and Services
The town continued to grow. A local newspaper called Santa Teresita started in 1958. The first local company for building homes also began. Over time, schools, movie theaters, cafes, and a police station were added. In 1965, the Jorge Newbery Airfield opened, making it easier to travel to and from the town. A local bank opened in 1967, helping the town's economy.
By 1980, Santa Teresita had grown to 6,240 people living there all year. In 2007, the town became a place for distance learning. This means students can study from Santa Teresita using a special radio system connected to the National University of Mar del Plata.
Protecting Wildlife: The La Plata Dolphin
In February 2016, Santa Teresita was in the news worldwide because of a rare La Plata dolphin. This type of dolphin is very special and endangered, meaning there are not many left.
Sadly, a dolphin got stuck on the beach. Many people gathered around it. Some people took the dolphin out of the water to take pictures, which caused it to die. This event made people around the world upset. It was a sad reminder of how important it is to protect wild animals and their homes. If you ever see a wild animal in trouble, it's best to contact local animal rescue groups or authorities for help.
