Kalasuri Arisen Ahubudu (Sinhala: අරිසෙන් අහුබුදු; born March 18, 1920 – died May 26, 2011) was a very famous Sri Lankan writer, speaker, scholar, and teacher. He was also a talented playwright, poet, and lyricist who wrote many popular Sinhala songs. He was an important member of the Hela Havula group, which focused on promoting the purity of the Sinhala language.

Arisen Ahubudu received several important awards for his work. These included three government awards for his writing. He was also given the special title of Kalasuri by the Sri Lankan government. He even won a Sarasaviya Award for being the best composer for films. Many people remember his songs, especially those sung by the famous W.D. Amaradeva, like "Gilem Obe Guna."

Early Life and Education

Arisen Ahubudu was born on March 18, 1920. His birthplace was Mudiyallagahawatta in Malalaga, Koggala, Sri Lanka. His parents were Devundara Devamanimendra Heronis De Silva and Wathugedara Laisohami.

He was the second of three children in his family. His parents named him Ariyasena Arsuboda. Later, he changed his name to the more traditional Sinhala name, Arisen Ahubudu. He married Sanda Ahubudu on August 8, 1953. Together, they had one daughter named Sanda Samathi Ahubudu.

When he was 17 years old in 1937, Arisen Ahubudu began his career as a teacher. His first teaching job was at Piyadigama Saripuththa College in Ahangama. A well-known scholar, Kumaratunga Munidasa, praised his excellent poetry. He even gave him the honorary title "Subas Pathin Kiwithi."

A Dedicated Teacher and Writer

Arisen Ahubudu spent 42 years of his life as a teacher. He taught at many schools across Sri Lanka. He started at Holy Trinity College in Nuwara Eliya. Then he moved to Mahinda College in Galle. Later, he taught at Maha Bodhi College in Maradana.

His longest teaching period was at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia. He taught there for 29 years, from 1952 to 1979. He was part of a group of teachers who helped improve the teaching of the Sinhala language after Sri Lanka gained independence. He also taught briefly at Kibiya Government College and Deegala Buddhist College, both in Katugastota.

While teaching, Arisen Ahubudu also focused on writing. In 1947, he started a magazine for children called Ediya. The word Ediya means "power." The magazine's main goal was to help children develop their abilities. He believed that Sinhalese people came from King Ravana, not King Vijaya.

Famous Songs and Dramas

Arisen Ahubudu was the last important member of the Hela Havula group. He was also the last well-known Sri Lankan lyricist of his time. He wrote the lyrics for many popular songs. Some of these include "Kate Kiri Suwanda," "Rena Gira Rena Ambe," and "Lanka Lanka Pembara Lanka."

In 1946, he started writing scripts for dramas. He wrote several very famous plays. These included Wanaraja Kumariya, Hela Hethiriya, and Sakwithi Ravana. His plays were very popular during that time.

Arisen Ahubudu passed away peacefully on May 26, 2011, due to old age.
