Aristazabal Island facts for kids
Aristazabal Island (French: île Aristizabal) is an island located in British Columbia, Canada. You can find it southwest of Princess Royal Island. This island is quite large, covering about 420 square kilometers (which is about 162 square miles).
The island was named on August 30, 1792. It was named by Jacinto Caamaño, a Spanish naval officer. He was the commander of a Spanish ship called the Aranzazu. Caamaño named the island after a famous Spanish captain, Gabriel de Aristazábal. He was one of the most respected Spanish naval leaders of his time. Interestingly, an English explorer named George Vancouver once had a map that spelled the island's name wrong, as "Aristizable."
