The Aristeus antennatus is a type of deep-sea prawn. It is often called the red prawn or Palamós prawn. This special crustacean is also caught in other Spanish towns like Dénia, Garrucha, and Huelva. It has a bright red color. People love it because its meat is fine, firm, and very tasty.
Red prawns are caught using a method called bottom trawling. This means a large net is pulled along the seabed. Fishermen usually find more and larger prawns during the summer months.
History of the Red Prawn
For a long time, red prawns have been caught near the coasts of Palamós. They were also fished in other towns in Catalonia, like Blanes, Arenys, and Roses. Around the 1950s, fishermen from southern Catalonia and the Valencian Country brought new fishing methods to Palamós.
They introduced the technology of fish trawling. This led to the discovery of very important prawn fishing areas. Since then, the red prawn has become very important to the Palamós Fishermen's Guild (Comfraria de Pescadors de Palamós). Today, it is famous and well-known.
