Arkansas Historical Association facts for kids
The Arkansas Historical Association is a group that studies and shares the history of Arkansas. It is based at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.
This association holds a yearly meeting about Arkansas history. These meetings happen in different cities across the state. The group also publishes a history magazine four times a year. They also send out a newsletter twice a year.
History of the Association
The association started on February 22, 1941. It was founded in Little Rock by important people and scholars from Arkansas. Their main goal was to make people more interested in Arkansas history. They also wanted to find, collect, and save old historical items. Another goal was to publish important historical writings and news.
J.H. Reynolds was chosen as the first president. The group decided that publishing a history magazine was their first big task. In March 1942, the first issue of The Arkansas Historical Quarterly came out.
The association had planned to meet every year. However, they did not hold a meeting for five years. This was because the United States was involved in World War II. Even so, the group kept collecting membership fees. They also continued to publish their Quarterly magazine.
The first meeting after the association started was held on April 26–27, 1946. It took place in the Pioneers Room of the Old State House in Little Rock. Since then, annual meetings have been held all over Arkansas. Some of these cities include Fort Smith, Fayetteville, Jonesboro, and Conway.
