Her Journey to Architecture
Arlette Schneiders was inspired by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. She studied architecture at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels. She finished her studies when she was 25 years old.
After graduating, she started working at an architecture firm in Luxembourg. Two years later, she decided to study more in Rome. For four years, she learned how to restore and fix old buildings.
Starting Her Own Firm
When she returned to Luxembourg, Arlette Schneiders worked with another architect. However, it was hard for her to lead projects. In the late 1980s, it was unusual for women to be in charge of big building projects. Because of this, she decided to open her own company. This made her the first woman in Luxembourg to run her own architecture firm.
Major Projects and Awards
Arlette Schneiders started with smaller projects. Then, she won a competition to design social housing. This success encouraged her to enter a European competition in 1997. She won first prize! This led to a big job: renovating the Fish Market area in Luxembourg City. She successfully added modern touches to old houses there.
In 2004, she won the Luxembourg Architecture Prize for her work on the Fish Market. She then designed many office buildings. These include the Plaza in the city center and the E-Building in Munsbach. She also designed two large buildings on Kirchberg: the Unico and the Axento. In 2011, she won another competition. This was for an even bigger building on Kirchberg, combining offices and shops.
