Arlette Schneiders facts for kids
Arlette Schneiders is a famous architect from Luxembourg. In 1989, she made history by becoming the first woman architect in Luxembourg to start her very own architecture company.
Her Life and Career
Arlette Schneiders was inspired by the amazing buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. She decided to study architecture at the Institut Saint-Luc in Brussels. She finished her studies when she was only 25 years old.
She started her career working at Théo Worré's architecture firm in Luxembourg. After two years, she wanted to learn even more. So, she moved to Rome and spent four years studying how to restore old buildings. This means she learned how to fix and preserve historical structures.
When she came back to Luxembourg, she worked with another architect named Claude Schmitz. However, it was a time when it was harder for women to lead big projects in architecture. Arlette found it challenging to complete her projects the way she wanted. Because of this, she decided to open her own business. This was a huge step, making her the first woman in Luxembourg to run an architecture firm without male influence.
At first, she worked on smaller projects. Then, she won a competition to design social housing. This success encouraged her to join a big European competition in 1997. She won first prize! This led to her getting a major job: renovating the historic Fish Market in Luxembourg City. She was very good at adding modern touches to old houses. For this work, she won the Luxembourg Architecture Prize in 2004.
Arlette Schneiders went on to design many important office buildings. These include the Plaza in the city center and the E-Building in Munsbach. She also designed two very large buildings in Kirchberg: the Unico (12,000 square meters) and the Axento (18,500 square meters). In 2011, she won another competition. This time, it was for an even bigger building in the same area. It needed to have both office spaces and shops.
