Arlo Bates (born December 16, 1850 – died August 25, 1918) was an American writer, teacher, and journalist. He was known for his novels, poems, and books about writing.

Life and Work of Arlo Bates

Arlo Bates was born in a town called East Machias, Maine. He went to college at Bowdoin College and finished his studies in 1876.

After college, Arlo Bates started working in the newspaper world. In 1880, he became an editor for the Boston Sunday Courier in Boston. An editor is someone who helps decide what goes into a newspaper and makes sure it's well-written. He worked there until 1893.

Later, Arlo Bates became a professor of English at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). A professor is a teacher at a college or university. He taught students about the English language and literature. In 1900, he was chosen as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This means he was recognized for his important contributions to arts and sciences.
