A Look Back: The Story of UWC-USA

The idea for UWC-USA came from American businessman Armand Hammer. His foundation bought the land in 1981 to create a United World College in the United States. Before the school opened, many buildings were fixed up and made new.

The school officially opened in the fall of 1982. A very important guest attended the opening: HM King Charles III, who was then Prince Charles. At that time, he was the president of the United World Colleges movement.

The first president of UWC-USA was Theodore D. Lockwood. He led the school from 1982 to 1993. Today, the school is led by Dr. Victoria Mora. She was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Helping Students: The Davis Gift

In 1998, the school received a very generous gift. Investment manager Shelby M.C. Davis and his wife Gale gave a large amount of money. This gift greatly helped the school's fund for student scholarships. Scholarships are like financial aid that helps students pay for school.

Their gift helps many students attend UWC-USA. It also provides scholarships for American students who are accepted to this school or any other UWC school. This initial gift was one of the largest private donations ever made to international education at the time.

School Achievements

UWC-USA has been recognized for its excellent education. In 2007, The Wall Street Journal named UWC-USA as one of the top 20 schools in the world. This was because of how well it prepared students to get into top American universities.

In 2010, the U.S. Center for Citizen Diplomacy also called UWC-USA a "Top Ten Program." This shows the school's success in teaching students to be good global citizens.

Where is UWC-USA Located?

The school is located in the town of Montezuma, New Mexico. This area is in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It's just northwest of the city of Las Vegas, New Mexico. The school is about 70 miles (110 km) from Santa Fe.

A very old and famous building is part of the campus. It's called the Montezuma Castle. This historic building adds a unique touch to the school's beautiful campus.
