Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Armand Zildjian (born February 18, 1921 – died December 26, 2002) was an American cymbal maker. He led the famous Avedis Zildjian Company, which makes cymbals for musicians all over the world.

A Family Legacy of Cymbals

Armand Zildjian was born in Milton, Massachusetts. He was the first Zildjian family member to be born in the United States. His family had a long history of making cymbals, going all the way back to 1623! That's almost 400 years! His ancestor, Avedis, started the company in Istanbul, which is now in Turkey.

For many years, the special secrets of making cymbals were only taught to the oldest son in the Zildjian family. But Armand's father, Avedis Zildjian III, decided to share these secrets with both of his sons, Armand and Robert. Later, Armand's father made him the President of the Avedis Zildjian Company. His brother, Robert, decided to start his own cymbal company called Sabian. This meant the two brothers became competitors in the cymbal business.

Education and War Service

Armand Zildjian went to Colgate University. During World War II, he served in the United States Coast Guard in the Pacific. After the war ended, he came back to his father's factory in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Revolutionizing Cymbals for Drummers

Armand and his father, Avedis, changed the cymbal world forever. They worked with famous drumming stars like Chick Webb and Gene Krupa. Together, they made cymbals thinner and better suited for modern drum sets. This helped drummers create new sounds and styles of music.

Awards and Recognition

Armand Zildjian received an honorary degree from Berklee College of Music. He was also added to the Percussive Hall of Fame, which honors great percussionists and cymbal makers. His name is even on the Guitar Center Rock Walk in Hollywood, California, alongside many music legends.

Later Life

Armand Zildjian passed away on December 26, 2002, at his home in Scottsdale, Arizona. He left behind a huge legacy in the music world, especially for drummers everywhere.
