Biography
Early Life and Education
Armando Uribe was born in Santiago, the capital city of Chile. He went to a school called Saint George's College. Later, he studied law at the University of Chile. He finished his law studies and became a lawyer in 1959. After that, he taught law at the same university for more than 30 years.
Teaching and Writing Career
Mr. Uribe also taught law at several other universities around the world. These included the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, Michigan State University in the United States, and the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne in France.
He wrote many books and articles. His writings covered different topics like politics, religion, and criminal law. He was a respected member of the Chilean Academy of Language. He was also part of the Royal Spanish Academy, which is a very important group for the Spanish language.
Work as a Diplomat
Armando Uribe served as a diplomat for Chile from 1967 to 1973. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. In 1968, he worked for the United Nations. Later, he worked at the Chilean embassy in the United States until 1970.
In 1971, he became Chile's ambassador to the People's Republic of China. He held this important job during the time of President Salvador Allende. However, after a big change in the Chilean government in 1973, he spoke out against the new leaders. Because of this, he was removed from his job.
Exile and Return
After losing his job, Armando Uribe and his family moved to France. This is called going into exile, meaning they had to leave their home country for political reasons. He did not return to Chile until 1990.
Awards and Recognition
In 2004, Armando Uribe won the Chilean National Prize for Literature. This is one of the highest honors for writers in Chile.
