Early Life and Family

Arnold Braemes came from a wealthy family in Dover. His father, Charles Braemes, was a successful merchant in Dover. His mother was Josina Spike from London. The Braemes family originally came from Flanders, a region that is now part of Belgium and France. His great-grandfather, Jasper Braemes, moved to England from Dunkirk many years before Arnold was born. Arnold followed his family's path and became a merchant in Dover.

A Supporter of the King

Arnold Braemes was known as a "Royalist." This means he strongly supported the King, Charles II, during a time when England was going through big political changes. He even paid a fine of $800 to show his loyalty. He knew Samuel Pepys, a famous diarist of that time. Braemes was with Pepys when King Charles II was brought back to power in 1660. This event is known as the Restoration.

His Time in Parliament

In 1660, Arnold Braemes was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Dover. He served in a special parliament called the Convention Parliament. This parliament played a key role in bringing King Charles II back to the throne. Just two days before the King's reign officially began, on May 27, 1660, Charles II honored Arnold Braemes by making him a knight. This is why he is known as Sir Arnold Braemes.
