Aroche (Portuguese: Arouche) is a small town, or municipality, in Spain. It is located in the province of Huelva, which is part of the Andalusia region. According to a count in 2005, about 3,319 people lived there.
A Look Back in Time
Aroche has a long and interesting history! It is similar to other towns like Moura and Serpa. Around the years 1230 to 1233, Aroche might have been taken over by a group called the Order of the Hospital. This was during the time of King Sancho II of Portugal.
However, some historians think the Christian forces might have taken control a bit later. This could have happened after the city of Seville fell in the late 1240s. That event created a gap in Muslim power in the area.
By 1251, King Afonso III of Portugal had taken control of Aroche. In 1253, Aroche was supposedly given to the Crown of Castile, which was another kingdom in Spain. The actual transfer of control happened later, in 1267. This was agreed upon in the Treaty of Badajoz. In fact, King Afonso III had given Aroche its own special set of laws, called a fuero, in 1255.
