Before 2004, Arroyo Alto was known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it was a special area set up by the government to count people during a census. In the year 2000, about 320 people lived there. Arroyo Alto is also part of a larger area called the Brownsville–Harlingen Metropolitan Statistical Area.
