Arseny Aleksandrovich Tarkovsky (Russian: Арсений Александрович Тарковский; June 25, 1907 – May 27, 1989) was an important Soviet and Russian poet. He was also a talented translator. He is well-known as the father of the famous film director, Andrei Tarkovsky.

Biography
Early Life and Family
Arseny Tarkovsky was born on June 25, 1907, in a city called Yelisavetgrad. This city is now known as Kropyvnytskyi in Ukraine. His father, Oleksandr Tarkovsky, was a poet and a public figure. His mother was Maria Danilovna Rachkovskaya. Oleksandr Tarkovsky had Polish noble roots.
Youth and Early Troubles
Arseny went to school in Elisavetgrad. He also studied music at a special school. Even when he was young, he loved poetry. He would go to poetry readings with his father and brother. They listened to famous poets like Igor Severyanin.
In 1921, when he was a teenager, Tarkovsky and his friends wrote a poem. This poem contained a hidden message about Vladimir Lenin. Because of this, they were arrested. Tarkovsky was the only one who managed to escape.
Starting His Career
By 1924, Tarkovsky moved to Moscow. From 1924 to 1925, he worked for a newspaper called Gudok. He managed a section of the newspaper that was written in poems.
From 1925 to 1929, he studied literature at a college in Moscow. During this time, he started translating poetry. He translated works from many languages, including Azerbaijani, Georgian, Armenian, and Arabic.
War and Injury
During World War II, Arseny Tarkovsky volunteered to be a war-correspondent. He worked for an army newspaper called Boevaya Trevoga (War Alarm). He was wounded in battle in 1943. He got a serious leg injury. This injury led to several operations, and he had to have parts of his leg removed.
Poetry and Translations
Arseny Tarkovsky became very well known for his translations. He translated poems by many famous poets from different countries. Some of these poets include Al-Ma'arri, Nizami Ganjavi, and Adam Mickiewicz.
His first collection of his own poems was called Before snow. It was published in 1962.
Later Life and Death
Arseny Tarkovsky mostly lived in Moscow and a town called Peredelkino. He passed away on May 27, 1989, in Moscow. In the same year, he was given the USSR State Prize after his death. This was a very important award.
