Discovering the Art Gallery's History
In 1974, people in Sault Ste. Marie who loved art got together. Their goal was to create a permanent art museum in their city. This group officially became the Art Gallery of Algoma on July 7, 1975.
Before they had their own building, the museum showed art in other places. From when they started until June 1976, they held exhibitions at the city's Civic Centre or the Old Stone House.
On June 30, 1976, the museum finally opened its first permanent building. This new space allowed them to offer art classes, host more exhibitions, and hold special events. However, in 1978, the Sault Ste. Marie City Council decided to move the museum to Clergue Park. Construction for the new building began in September 1979. The museum officially opened its doors at this new location in September 1980.
Exploring the Museum's Design
The Art Gallery of Algoma is located on the north side of the St. Marys River. It's just east of the Sault Ste. Marie Canal. The museum area includes the main building and a special outdoor sculpture garden.
The main building is about 1,000 square meters (10,000 square feet). It was designed by a local architect named R. V. B. Burgoyne. The outside of the building has cool diagonal roof lines. There's also a big, two-story window in the lobby. Burgoyne said he designed the building to be "people centred," meaning it was made to be welcoming. Since it opened in 1980, the building has been updated several times, including its gift shop.
