What is the Art Gallery of Burlington?
The Art Gallery of Burlington is a public art gallery. This means it's a place where everyone can come to see and learn about art. It's not just for looking at art, though! It also has studios where people can create their own art.
How the Gallery Started
The gallery began in 1978 thanks to several art groups in Burlington. These groups wanted a special place to practice different kinds of art. They created studios for things like photography, weaving, sculpture, woodcarving, and ceramics. These groups are now known as Arts Burlington.
Over time, the gallery grew bigger. It started to hold art shows, publish books about art, and collect amazing pieces of art. In 1983, it began collecting modern Canadian ceramic art, which is now its main focus. The building itself has been made bigger twice, once in 1991 and again in 2001.
Exploring the Gallery Building
The Art Gallery of Burlington is a large building, about 4,100 square meters (that's like 44,132 square feet!). It has many different areas for art and learning.
Art Exhibition Spaces
The gallery has several places where you can see art on display. The biggest one is the AIC Gallery, which is about 400 square meters. There's also the F. & R. (Bob) Perry Gallery, which is a bit smaller at 40 square meters. You'll also find art in special display cases throughout the building. Outside, there's a 225 square meter courtyard where they sometimes show art that's made for outdoor spaces.
Art Studios and Classrooms
If you love to create, the gallery has 10 studio classrooms. These are great places to take art classes and learn new skills. The gallery also has meeting rooms, a gift shop, a café, and offices.
