The Art Gallery of Peterborough is a fantastic place where you can explore art for free! It's a public art gallery located in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. It's a non-profit organization, which means it focuses on sharing art with the community rather than making money.
The gallery was started in 1974 by a group of dedicated volunteers. In 1977, the City of Peterborough gave the gallery a special historic building called Foster House. This beautiful building is in a park right next to Little Lake. In 1979, the gallery grew even bigger, adding a modern section. Now, the gallery is about 11,000 square feet (1,000 m2) (that's over 1,000 square meters) in size!
The Art Gallery of Peterborough has a collection of more than 1,300 pieces of art. Besides showing its permanent collection and special exhibitions, the gallery also offers many fun and educational programs for both kids and adults. There's even a gallery shop where you can find unique artworks made by local artists.
How the Gallery Works
The gallery gets money to buy new art from private donations and special grants from organizations like the Canada Council. The money needed to run the gallery every year comes from the Ontario Arts Council, the Canada Council for the Arts, and from fundraising events in the community. The Art Gallery of Peterborough is also supported by the City of Peterborough. It is a member of the Ontario Association of Art Galleries, which connects art galleries across Ontario.

The gallery has artworks by many well-known Canadian artists. These include Carl Beam, Rebecca Belmore, David Bierk, Ron Bloore, Emily Carr, Dorothy Caldwell, A.J. Casson, Paterson Ewen, Ivan Eyre, Gershon Iskowitz, A.Y. Jackson, Rita Letendre, Sanaz Mazinani, Daphne Odjig, Jack Shadbolt, and Bill Vazan.
