James Chester Arthur Hefner Jr. (born August 2, 1913 – died May 2, 1988), known as Art Hefner, was an American professional baseball player. He played as a center fielder in the Negro Leagues. Art Hefner played for the New York Black Yankees in 1948. He then joined the Philadelphia Stars in 1949.
Art Hefner's Baseball Journey
Art Hefner was born in Transylvania County, North Carolina. His birthday was August 2, 1913. He started his career in the Negro Leagues on April 25, 1948. His first team was the New York Black Yankees.
In 1949, the New York Black Yankees team broke up. This happened because many star players from the Negro Leagues started joining Major League Baseball. Major League Baseball had recently allowed players of all races to join.
Art Hefner was first chosen by the Birmingham Black Barons. But before the new season began, he moved to the Philadelphia Stars. He played for them in 1949.
Life After Baseball
After his time playing baseball, Art Hefner worked for a company called DuPont. He was also a deacon at the Bethel "A" Baptist Church in Brevard, North Carolina. He passed away on May 2, 1988.
