Arthur Watterson Hoppe (born April 23, 1925 – died February 1, 2000) was a very popular newspaper writer. He wrote a special kind of article called a column for the San Francisco Chronicle newspaper for over 40 years.

Art Hoppe was famous for his funny and clever columns. He often used humor to make fun of people who thought they were very important. He even created silly characters, like Homer T. Pettibone, who knew everything. Another character was a presidential candidate named Nobody. Sometimes, Hoppe wrote serious articles too, like his well-known 1971 column against the Vietnam War, called "To Root Against Your Country."

Art Hoppe's Amazing Career

Starting Out at the Newspaper

Art Hoppe began his career at the Chronicle newspaper in 1949. He started as a "copy boy," which meant he helped move papers and messages around the office. Later, he became a reporter, gathering news and writing stories. Soon after, he started writing his own special column.

A Popular Voice Across the Nation

When Art Hoppe's column was most popular, it appeared in the Chronicle five days a week. It was also shared with over 100 other newspapers all across the country. This is called "syndication," meaning many newspapers could print his work. He was good friends with other famous columnists like Russell Baker and Art Buchwald.

Awards and Legacy

In 1996, Art Hoppe received a special honor. He got the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. This award recognized his long and successful career. He also did something kind for his friend, Herb Caen, another Chronicle columnist. Hoppe released Caen from a promise they had made about accepting a special 1996 Pulitzer Prize. Art Hoppe passed away in February 2000 at the age of 74. He is remembered by his wife, Gloria, and their four children.
