Arthur Baldwin Sansom Jr. (September 16, 1920 – July 4, 1991), known as Art Sansom, was a famous American comic strip cartoonist. He created the very popular comic strip The Born Loser.
Art Sansom was born in East Cleveland, Ohio. He studied art at Ohio Wesleyan University and graduated in 1942. After college, he worked as an engineer and draftsman for General Electric.
What Comic Strips Did Art Sansom Create?
Art Sansom created several comic strips during his career. From 1952 to 1964, he worked on a strip called Chris Welkin—Planeteer. He created this strip with Russ Winterbotham.
The Born Loser Comic Strip
In 1965, Art Sansom created his most famous comic strip, The Born Loser. This strip was published by the Newspaper Enterprise Association. It became very popular and ran for many years.
In the mid-1980s, Art Sansom's son, Chip Sansom, started helping him with the strip. When Art Sansom passed away, Chip Sansom took over the comic strip completely.
What Awards Did Art Sansom Win?
Art Sansom was recognized for his amazing work. He received the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award. This award is given to the best humor comic strip. He won it twice, in 1987 and again in 1991.
Art Sansom is buried in Lakewood Park Cemetery in Rocky River, Ohio.
