History of Artesian
The first settlement in the area that is now Artesian began in 1883. It was first called "Diana." A post office was set up with this name in 1883.
Later, the name was changed to Denton. Then, in 1887, it became Artesian City. Finally, in 1889, the name was shortened to Artesian. The town got its current name from the artesian aquifer and wells nearby. An artesian well is a special kind of well where water flows up naturally from the ground.
