The Arthroleptidae are a special group of frogs found in sub-Saharan Africa. People often call them squeakers because they make a high-pitched sound. These frogs are quite small, usually less than 4 centimeters (about 1.5 inches) long.
They mostly live on land, often hiding in the fallen leaves on the forest floor. What makes them unique is how they grow up. Unlike many frogs, they don't have tadpoles that swim in water. Instead, they lay their eggs on the ground. Some species hatch as tiny, fully formed adult frogs. Others hatch with small tails that disappear as they grow.
Types of Squeaker Frogs
The Arthroleptidae family is divided into two main groups, called subfamilies: Arthroleptinae and Leptopelinae. Some scientists even think these two groups should be considered separate families!
