Jacques Essebag (born March 10, 1966), known by his stage name Arthur, is a famous French television host, producer, and comedian. He started his career in radio and later became well-known for hosting popular TV shows and performing on stage.

About Arthur

Arthur has had a long and successful career in entertainment. He is known for his energetic personality and for creating many popular shows. He has worked in radio, television, and theater, becoming a big name in French media.

Early Life and Beginnings

Jacques Essebag was born in Casablanca, Morocco, on March 10, 1966. His father was an accountant, and his mother was a homemaker. In 1967, his family moved to France, settling in Massy, near Paris.

After high school, he started studying law. However, he soon found his passion in radio. He began hosting a sports show called Tonus on a local radio station in Massy. This was the start of his exciting career.

His Radio Journey

Arthur's radio career began in 1987 at RFM. He chose the name "Arthur" to stand out. After a short time at Kiss Fm, he joined Skyrock in 1989. There, he created a show called Les zigotos du matin with Skyman.

Becoming Famous on Radio

In 1991, Arthur moved to Fun Radio. He hosted a morning show where he created fun games. His popularity grew quickly. He then met Emmanuel Lévy, also known as Maître Lévy, who became his director and worked with him on TV.

In 1992, he joined Europe 1 to host Arthur et les pirates. This show was very popular for four seasons. He continued to play similar games as he did on Fun Radio.

In 1996, Arthur returned to Europe 2 to host La Matinale. This show featured many funny sketches with fake listeners. The comedy team included well-known comedians like Gad Elmaleh and Axelle Laffont.

Radio in the 2000s

In 2000, Arthur went back to Fun Radio to host PlanetArthur. He worked with Maître Levy, Myriam, Valérie Benaïm, and Cyril Hanouna.

In 2004, there was a disagreement between Arthur and Fun Radio. Arthur wanted to leave because another host, Sébastien Cauet, joined the station. Arthur felt Cauet had made an inappropriate joke in the past. Fun Radio did not want to let him go. Arthur then made three shows called Libérez Arthur (Free Arthur), asking to be released from his contract. Fun Radio eventually stopped broadcasting his show. Later, in 2007, Arthur and Cauet became friends again.

A few months after leaving Fun Radio, Arthur joined Europe 2. He hosted Arthur et les Pirates again. His first show there set a world record for the longest continuous radio show, lasting 33 hours! This record was later broken by Cauet. From 2005 to 2006, he hosted another program called Radio Arthur.

Arthur's TV Career

Arthur started his television career in 1992 with L'Émission impossible on TF1. This show mixed talk show elements with funny sketches. It introduced new comedians to the public.

Popular TV Shows

In 1994, he began hosting Les Enfants de la télé on France 2 with Pierre Tchernia. This show became very successful. In 1996, he also hosted La Fureur du samedi soir, a karaoke program. He later brought both of these popular shows to TF1. He also co-hosted the Victoires de la Musique awards with Michel Drucker.

Arthur launched other entertainment shows on TF1, such as Rêve d'un soir and 120 minutes de bonheur. He also produced successful programs like Exclusif and La Grosse Émission through his company, Case Productions.

In 2001, Arthur became vice president of Endemol France. This company launched many reality TV shows in France. Arthur sold his shares in Endemol in 2006.

He continued to host Les Enfants de la Télé and other popular shows, including TF1's À prendre ou à laisser, which is the French version of Deal or No Deal. He also hosted the NRJ Music Awards in 2007.

In August 2007, he decided to take a break from À prendre ou à laisser to focus on his theater work. However, he returned to host it again in 2009 for a few months.

Since 2010, Arthur has hosted Ce Soir Avec Arthur on the Comedie! channel. This weekly show combines news and humor. Some parts of the show were noted for being very similar to the American show The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Arthur later appeared on Craig Ferguson's show, explaining that the similarities were an "homage" (a tribute) rather than a copy. They showed that there was no bad feeling between them, and even became friends. In 2011, Craig Ferguson visited France and appeared on Arthur's show.

Stage Performances

In September 2005, Arthur started his theater career with a one-man show called Arthur en vrai. He wanted to show the public a different side of himself. This show toured in Europe, North Africa, and Quebec, and was seen by over 100,000 people.

In 2007, Arthur played the role of Pierre Brochan in the play Le Dîner de Cons, alongside Dany Boon. The director, Francis Veber, chose him for the role. The play was very well received by critics and was performed over 200 times.

In late 2008, Arthur began his second one-man show, I Show. In this comedy show, he talked about new technologies. In 2009, some of his performances were canceled due to protests. Arthur spoke out publicly, saying he was a victim of a campaign against him.

Personal Life

Arthur has a son named Samuel with former model Léa Vigny. In 2004, he married Estelle Lefébure. They divorced in 2008. He later married Mareva Galanter in 2017.
